What to Write in a Divorce Card: Supportive and Funny Ideas
Divorce cards are tricky. Some friends are heartbroken, some are relieved, and plenty are both on the same day. The right message depends entirely on where they are, so here are ideas for every mood.
Supportive divorce messages
- "I'm so sorry you're going through this. I'm here for whatever you need, whenever you need it."
- "You don't have to have it all figured out. Just know that you're loved."
- "This is the end of one chapter, not the end of your story. I can't wait to see what comes next."
- "Sending you a hug, a bottle of wine and an open invitation to rant."
Encouraging messages for a fresh start
- "Here's to new beginnings, quiet evenings and full control of the TV remote."
- "You were always brilliant. Now you get to remember it."
- "Proud of you for choosing yourself."
Funny divorce messages (for the right friend)
- "Congratulations on getting rid of about 13 stone of dead weight."
- "Single, fabulous and in charge of the thermostat. Living the dream."
- "Happy divorce! I never liked him anyway. Well, I did, but not anymore."
Things to avoid writing
- Criticising their ex if they're still upset. They may not be ready to hear it.
- "Plenty more fish in the sea." Nobody wants to hear about fish right now.
- Questions about what happened. Let them tell you if they want to.
Is it OK to send a divorce card?
Yes. A card says "I've noticed, and I care" without forcing a big conversation. If you're not sure how they're feeling, a gentle thinking of you message is always safe.
